Hi Friends,
Work took me back to Lake Tahoe today, thank goodness for the company making mistakes. After a night of pretty heavy snow and some more added in the morning it looked beautiful. One of the best things about Spring snow storms is that they only last a short time and then we get right back into the Spring experience.
I stopped today at a overlook that I used to always stop at to catch my breath. Lately I had flown right past this spot because I found myself on the wrong side of the highway. Today I needed a good catch my breath break and found it at Logan Shoals near Cave Rock. I really could have taken an hour or two here but had to get back on the road.

Back Over Donner Pass
Hi Friends,
Just put together another short video of my last trip over Donner Pass. Thought It is getting late in March so these snow storms will be coming to an end soon, and I will be running to Vacaville on bare pavement again. The Spring and Summer are what make these storms a bit more bearable. With every trip over now I can see the trees turning green again, many with colorfiul flowers on them as they get ready to celebrate the return of warmer days.
On this trip CalTrans had maximun chain requirements up for the trucks and the roads were covered with ice and a top layer of snow. It was actually not a bad trip over, but I do like to take it a bit slower than the rest of the drivers on the road. My trailer is usually empty heading West over the hill so it has a tendency to slide around a bit more than those with a load. Then again, my thinking is that I drive like an old man so I can live to be an old man.
So it is off on another adventure over Donner Pass heading West. This time I left the video at normal speed and the sound is on so you can hear the rumble of the chains. It tells a story about a day in my life and reminds me of the glory of Spring and Summer and the warmth of the Sun.
So strap in and grab a warm beverage and lets get on the road.

Up and Over Donner Pass

Hi Friends,
It has been such a mild Winter so far and it is almost over. I have been waiting for some time to make a video from my dash cam of a run over Donner Pass in the snow. Well I was finally able to put together something for you the other day. It is not high cinema or award winning, but it was fun to make.
These late Winter storms can be interesting. It might be 60 to 70 degrees one day and I can be throwing chains the next day. That was the case this week. I was riding the horses with Brenda on Sunday and loving the warm sun then on Tuesday we were driving 60 miles with the tires making their chain noise on the pavement.
There was not that much snow, but CalTrans must figure if you let the drivers run wild they will hit something or worse. I understand and just take my time getting over the hill. You will probably notice there are a bunch of cars and trucks that are flying past me. It bothered me at one time in my life, but not any more. I figure my job is to get the load over the hill safely and it will take the time it takes. One of my first bosses at Mohawk reminded me regularly that it was just rug and nothing more. Lives did not depend on it and a couple extra hours would not make that big a difference.
It is kind of fun driving most of the time. When the season gets toward the end and we have been chaining for a few months, I tend to get tired of it. Mostly I get tired of the smell of the road grime and the wet. Sometimes it feels like I am wet for months. Then comes Spring and I smile and enjoy watching the season change back to green and life return to the roads I drive. Soon the Winter grind is forgotten until October brings it back. Bliss!

Winter is Trying to Hold on a Bit Longer in Washoe Valley

Hi Friends,
With Spring about to take hold of our weather, we found Winter trying to hold on for just a bit longer this morning. Yesterdays wind and blue skies have changed to cold wind, grey skies and snow today. It has taken the horses by surprise and has left a pretty white covering on the plants and lawn ornaments. In addition, we were forced to postpone a trip to Medford to get away from work and all this weekend.
It sure is pretty and as we have discovered, it is not so bad to get snow in March because we know that next week or the week after it will be almost 70 degrees again.
And so we will venture out and enjoy all that this day has to offer us. Enjoy this little video we made, it makes for some fun looking back and saying, "wow, remember when it was cold and snowy?"

Trucking Over Donner Pass Again ... Big Snow Storm

Hi Friends,
We are in the middle of one of those late Winter almost Spring snow storms that seem to come around this time of year. It is leaving it's white fluffy goodness all over the place, and causing the usual backups and craziness.
Work caused me to make a slippery, slushy trip over Donner Pass on Thursday as well as in the Reno area on Friday. It was full of surprises and fun so I took the Flip video camera out to document the adventure.
I actually was stuck on Donner Pass on Thursday just before the summit. I had moved over to the hammer lane to pass a stuck truck and car and oops where did my traction go. I called for the Cal Trans pusher truck but got no answer. So I did my best working the truck back and forth looking for just a bit of traction, and there it was. Just a bit of traction but just enough to get me moving again. I was out of the fast lane and thankfully was not holding up traffic any longer.
It was a 7.5 hour trip from Reno to West Sacramento and just as long back to Reno. Got home late and warmed up just enough to get me through Friday.
So glad the week is over and I am sure looking forward to a view of the snow from inside the house where it is warm and dry. Hope you are warm and dry too.

Winter Wonderland?
Hi Friends,
We woke to more snow this morning. Brenda is really getting tired of it, but it does make things look pretty. Brenda is still reminding me that she hates the snow, but is either getting used to it or is starting to give up on my ability (or interest in) changing it. She would Love to live in a tropical place with year round warm sun and light breezes so she can ride horses every day.
The chihuahuas don't much like the snow either. They are so much shorter than the snow drifts that they just might get lost in the little trails Brenda builds for them.
I am sure we both dreamed of riding the horses last night and thought this snow might be a dream. We were disappointed when we woke up to find it still in the driveway, with mote added overnight.
Oh well we are off to the bookstore and some shopping and then we will see what develops.

Snow Falling in the Valley
Hi Friends,
We have enjoyed a really warm and dry New Year so far. Or at least up until last night.
Old man Winter has added about a foot of snow in our driveway and the horse pastures. The horses are not grumbling yet, but I am. And Brenda has reminded me the last couple of days, how much she hates snow.
Well, back to shoveling the driveway. Thought I would share this picture I took before the shoveling started this morning.

Driving Around Reno, Carson City and Minden in the Snow
Hi Friends,
On Friday December 17th it was snowing and the roads were a little slick, but it was fun to drive around delivering my carpet and such. I thought it might be fun to allow the dash cam to capture a few minutes of my adventures. I didn't get any video of the cars and trucks that forgot the dirty side/shiny side rule, they were all over the place. You would have thought we lived in some place that never saw snow.
It was a long day but it was sort of refreshing. Don't get me wrong, I am already tired of the snow and can't wait until Spring.

It is Still Winter .. But We Are Getting Close to Spring
Hi Friends,
We had about a week of Spring like sunshine and beautiful days, now we are back to the Wintery snowy but still beautiful Nevada weather. Last week we took the horses out for a wonderful long ride at the equestrian park and this week we had big plans to get my riding lessons under way. Oh well we can get that started next week is the sun returns. This morning I took some video to share of the morning storm. At the time of the video, it was about inches deep, but has increased to about 8 inches this afternoon.
Life is indeed good in the valley ......

We Are in the Middle of a Great Winter!
Hi Friends,
We are smack dab in the middle of an amazing Winter so far. The last couple weeks have made some major inroads towards having plenty of water for all the lakes in the Reno area. Of course we can always use more, and with all the crazy growth that has been allowed the past few years, now we need considerably more water than before.
Winter and all that it brings is amazing and at times a bit challenging too. I made a couple videos of my experiences chaining up and crossing over Donner Pass in a big storm a week or so back. Hope you enjoy the video and come back from time to time to see what new adventure we are in the middle of.
